Today, May 22, is known as "Matcha Shincha (New Tea) Day"!
In Japan, today, May 22, is known as "Matcha Shincha (New Tea) Day."
This special day was established by a Japanese tea farm that cultivates, harvests, and sells matcha and shincha.
The farm creatively interpreted the kanji character for "tea" (茶) by viewing the grass radical (艹) as two tens (十 and 十).
The remaining part of the character resembles eighty-eight (八十八), and when combined, they form 108.
Thus, May 22, which is approximately 108 days after the beginning of spring, was chosen as the commemorative day.
Tea leaves come from an evergreen tree in the camellia family, known as the tea plant (Camellia sinensis).
It is believed that tea was brought to Japan from Asia over 700 years ago.
Tea plants can be harvested about four times a year from spring to autumn.
The first flush of new shoots, harvested in this period, is used to make what is called "ichibancha" or "shincha."
Tea leaves harvested at this time have stored nutrients throughout the winter, leading to the belief that drinking shincha can ensure good health and longevity.
Enjoying shincha, which has been carefully nurtured with the blessings of nature such as sunlight, water, air, and soil, is a wonderful way for everyone to promote their health.
